What is it about the P's and B's?? Preasts?? Bepsi? etc..This was published on Wednesday, January 4th in Al-Rai El Aam...I wonder if the conservative writers realized their articles were just two pages away from this Ad...Preasts any one?

the thing with /p/ and /b/ is that they are only different in voicing
/b/ is voiced.. which means that ur cords will vibrate when u use it in a word
try putting ur finger on ur throat, and say something like "cab" - u should feel a sliiight vibration
to make it clearer, try saying "cap" also holding ur finger to ur throat .. u should definitely feel the diff now (u dont feel the slight vibration on ur finger with the 'cap' word)

having said that, in arabic as a language, and kuwaiti as one of its dialects.. we do not have the sound /p/ in our set of sounds NATIVE to our mother tongue (arabic/q8i)
think of it very similar to something like the Indians when they talk in English, you'll notice the reflexive R .. its like they're forcing the /r/ sound at many different intervals..
well, theyre not.. its just their tongue movement (which is different than ours because their mother tongue isnt arabic/q8i, its Hindi)

people sometimes make fun of kuwaitis, as on example, because they cannot differentiate between the /p/ and /b/ .. i find that to be pathetic EXCEPT in the case that this kuwaiti has had a lot of exposure and practice of the language .. then again, it isnt something to "mock" simply becoz its just the way tongues and language use is "set" to a certain method
sure, it can be learned .. but it will probably be something like teaching a japanese person to differentiate between the /l/ and /r/ sound in English

Lol they had that in a NEWSPAPER? You'd think they'd point it out to them huh?
sometimes when you are spelling a word that has a p or a b, he asks is it the "b" that is up or the "b" that is down, meaning p ;-) even though you pronounced the letter correctly, I think even their ears cannot distinguish the sound also.

temetwir..."La yaskhar qawman min qawman, 3asa an yakoona khairun minhum"...I hope I didn't sound like I was making fun...and I absolutely see your point..but the strange thing is that I've heard them put the P instead of B..when it's supposed to be a B..like they'd say Papy..when they want to say Baby..and then the opposite...Bepsi instead of Pepsi...so in most cases they can say the P...but never put it were it's supposed to be...(hope that makes sense!)...and in regards to the indians..I believe they also can't pronounce the V...and place a w instead...i.e..I beliewe this is wery..wery wiolent...as in I believe this is very very violent...:)..not that I'm making fun here..i just remembered another letter they can't pronounce...:)
As for the Ad...ya3ni elly eybu6 el chabd..if you're going to put an Ad in the newspaper..at least check the spelling!!...Fog ena product ey fashil!..SUCKS!

Paps...too funny! You reminded of this story my Mom told me...she was at a hairdresser and the hairdresser was putting a khal9a siriya on some lady's hair..she put the rollers on and then put her under the hairdryer..after half an hour..the woman began to scream...each roller kept falling off..with her hair in it..it was awful..the woman was practically bold after that!...kilish mo shay!! Poor woman! Granted my Mom never went to that hairdresser again!

DonV...exactly..."ya3ni el sha7ta ta7at willa fog"..and when I tell them ..they still confuse it in conversation and say the P when it's a B and a B when it's a P...very strange! There must be an explanation for it "put" :)..I still can't figure it out!

I remember the story of a Kuwaiti guy who was with me in the English program and the teacher asked us for Arabic proverbs and he said "Beoble Beoble" I looked at him with a puzzled face coz I had no idea what he was trying to say and then I asked him in Arabic what he meant by “Beoble Beoble” and he said "alnass lel nass" LOL
So since that day me and my friends always say Beoble Beoble ;)
